U.S. Customs and Border Protection seized 2,000 pounds of fentanyl at the southern border in October 2024.

“Trump’s policies are having an impact, one hundred percent,” Acting Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Administrator Derek Maltz told The Daily Wire.

Maltz said that Trump has forced the cartels to change their drug smuggling strategy.

Fentanyl that was once bound for the United States during the Biden administration is being sold in Europe and other parts of Latin America.

“We got their attention with a lot of talk about the deaths in America, and the cartels got very concerned. It became a business decision.” Maltz explained.

Trump threatened to slap 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico before he took office unless they did more to stop illegal immigration and fentanyl.

Mexico responded by stepping up their law enforcement and military operations against the cartels.

Maltz credited Trump wielding the threat of tariffs for a 25% drop in fentanyl coming into the country.

New York Times reporter Natalie Kitroeff traveled to the Mexican state of Sinaloa, home of the powerful Sinaloa Cartel, in March “to see whether all of the pressure that Trump had put on Mexico had led to real changes, whether any of this actually made a difference.”

Kitroeff said her sources in the cartels and the government claimed that fentanyl production in the region was plummeting because of a crackdown by the Mexican military.

“I think it’s pretty clear that the amount of progress, arrests, raids, lab busts, the pace of these actions is something that we’ve not seen in recent history in Mexico. One analyst told us, we’ve seen in one month what we might have seen in years,” Kitroeff explained. “I think what we’ve seen is that at least in this context, in this month, and in this place, the tariffs worked, for now at least.”
