During a recent appearance on “Fox News Sunday,” Denver Mayor Mike Johnston (D) discussed the migrant crisis in his city, arguing that the immigration structure right now was not sustainable. He further pushed for migrants to be given work permits.
Fox News’s Shannon Bream asked the Denver mayor about a recent statement by Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), who had argued that work permits would encourage migrants to enter the United States and would undermine the efforts of the administration to deter migration.
However, Johnston responded by arguing that many available jobs could be filled by migrants. He added that there were more job openings right now than migrant arrivals. He pointed out that what they knew was that coordinating the migrant’s entry worked, as had been clear when the refugees from Ukraine and Afghanistan were let into the country. He said it was all about identifying which cities had the capacity to support the immigrants and provide them with work authorization to minimize the need for federal support. He added that these were the people who had succeeded after migrating.
He proceeded to tell Bream that he was hoping this was a “solvable problem” but argued that the current crisis was “unsustainable” in its current structure, as 30 to 40,000 people were arriving in cities without any federal support or work authorization. He commented that this put a heavy strain on cities, but that did not mean the problem could not be solved.
